The New York City Health and Hospitals
Corporation (HHC) is dedicated to providing New Yorkers with quality
health care services. However, in order to achieve its mission
statement of promoting and protecting the health, welfare and safety of
the people of the City of New York, HHC requires the use of modern
software applications to help its internal activities function smoothly
and efficiently.
A few years ago, HHC commissioned a firm to
develop and implement a new Purchase Order System in the hopes that the
system will save human labor by storing information and producing
accurate reports efficiently. Yet this system turned out to be a major
disappointment as it was complicated to use and didn't operate
properly. HHC was thus forced to revert to its old labor-intensive
process of maintaining its purchase orders.

HHC then approached DSI for a solution
to its inefficient and outdated way of tracking information and
generating reports. The DSI consultant service personnel promptly met
with HHC to discuss the creation of a new Purchase Requisitions
application and outlined the objectives. DSI also evaluated the
Purchase Order System that was unsatisfactorily developed by the
previous firm hired by HHC, and the specific improvements that had to
be implemented in the new application were discussed.
At the
front end, DSI created the Purchase Requisition application using MS
Visual Basic 6.0 to produce the graphical user interface. At the back
end, DSI used MS Access to support the database. The application
achieved the objective of being user-friendly by having clear
instructions and easy navigation. The application saves labor by
automatically updating numerous information, such as dates and order
#s. The application also provides a better search engine, as well as
enhanced browsing and grouping options, allowing users to access,
update, and generate reports with much more ease and efficiency.
Moreover, the application displays all of the required information for
each requisition, making information tracking an effortless task.
Another important feature of the application is its ability to quickly
generate accurate and comprehensive monthly and annual reports; the
reports can also be viewed and printed with different screen layout
selections.
HHC is a wide-ranging network of hospitals,
health-care agencies, educational and wellness programs, clinics and
health plans. HHC revenues total approximately $4.1 billion each year
and annually serves millions of patients. In order to maintain a
structured and efficient corporation to provide professional health
care services, HHC needs to employ the highest quality tools, and that
is exactly the type of excellence of the Purchase Requisitions
application that DSI delivered to HHC.
